On the fifth day of a fragile pause in fighting between Israel and Hamas, CIA Director William J. Burns arrived in Qatar for secret meetings to help broker a more expansive deal to exchange more hostages held in Gaza for prisoners held in Israel, The Washington Post reported. Burns is pushing to broaden ongoing hostage negotiations, which have so far focused on women and children, to include the release of men and military personnel. The initial four-day combat pause mediated by Qatar was extended by 48 hours and could be renewed again, offering hope to the families of hostages and respite to Gazans under a weeks-long Israeli air and ground assault. The deal sets up the potential release of 10 more hostages Tuesday with an equal number on Wednesday, in exchange for three times as many prisoners. Since the pause began Friday, 150 Palestinians, 51 Israelis including dual nationals, and 18 foreign nationals have been released. They include one American, 4-year-old Abigail Edan. Fewer than ten Americans remain held in captivity in Gaza, according to White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby.
